Offense, offense, and more offense should be prevalent in Monday’s College Football National Championship game, as both Alabama and Ohio State love to score. This contest between the Crimson Tide and the Buckeyes has all the makings of a shootout.

That’s why, with this week’s One Bet, $100, I’m taking the over of 75 points. That number would usually make me cringe, but I really believe the two teams have the firepower to each score 40 or more points.

I’ve been high on Alabama all season, though they burned me on my last One Bet, $100. I picked them to cover 17 points against Florida in the SEC Championship game and they barely won, 52-46.

One Bet, $100

This Week  Last Bet  Season Total
Alabama/OSU Over 75 Lost: Alabama 3-4, Down $130

If I have to pick a winner in the National Championship game, I would probably go with Alabama, but I certainly wouldn’t feel good about giving away 8.5 points.

I feel more confident in the over. It opened at 76.5 and was immediately bet down to 75.5. I managed to find it at 75 at William Hill.

National Championship Game Features Potent Offenses

Both teams have shown they can score, and not just against patsies. Alabama averaged 48.2 points a game and scored 50 or more points in six games, including the SEC Championship, where they hung 52 on Florida.

There were concerns Ohio State wouldn’t be able to generate offense against quality teams because they only played six games. But in those six games, the lowest point total the Buckeyes had was 22 in the Big 10 Championship game against Northwestern.

When they faced Clemson in the semifinal game of the College Football Playoff, they destroyed the No. 2 Tigers, 49-28. They enter this game against the Crimson Tide averaging 43.4 points in seven games.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said the team’s offensive philosophy has been constant, but this year, it’s been taking off.

“Each year it’s changed, tweaked here and there, but at the end of the day, I think the basis of (the offense) has pretty much stayed the same,” Day said.

Ohio State did get a scare in the Clemson game when quarterback Justin Fields suffered a brutal hit. He was seen grimacing on the sidelines, but Day said he should be ready to go on Monday.

Both Defenses Might Struggle

While the offenses for both Ohio State and Alabama have been spectacular, the defenses aren’t as solid as they have been in previous years. Alabama is allowing an average of 353.2 yards a game, which is almost double what they allowed last year.

Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban told reporters this week the game has definitely become more offense-oriented.

“I don’t think there’s any question about the fact that college football has changed dramatically in the last 10, 12 years,” Saban said. “I think the advent of the spread, RPOs, blocking downfield when passes are caught behind the line of scrimmage, all those things have dramatically changed the style of play offensively, and that affects every part of the game.”

Why the Over Will Hit

With both teams putting more emphasis on scoring, the final result could easily be over 75 points. Defenses for both Alabama and Ohio State are down from previous years, and that could definitely lead to more points than expected being scored.

This game should go over, not just because of the defenses, but because of the potency of the offenses. They seem to be able to score at will, no matter who they are facing.

The old saying of football games are won in the trenches couldn’t be more true with the Tampa Bay-Washington Wild Card game on Saturday. Whoever controls the line of scrimmage in this contest should advance to the next round of the NFL Playoffs.

Chase Young Washington-Tampa Bay
Chase Young and the rest of the defensive lineman for Washington will be a key to an upset over Tampa Bay on Saturday. (Image: Getty)

That is why with this week’s One Bet, $100, I am taking Washington +8.5 points at home against Tampa Bay. I don’t think Washington is going to beat Tampa Bay, but I do think they are going to give them fits, and make this game a lot closer than 8.5 points.

My last bet on the NFL was on the final game of the season when I stupidly believed Philadelphia would be able to take down Dallas. The Eagles got trounced, and my record went to 3-4 on the season.

One Bet, $100

This Week  Last Week  Season Total
Washington +8.5 Lost: Philadelphia 3-4, Down $35

It appears the sharps share my feelings on this game, though. The line opened at 6.5 points, and was quickly bet up to 8.5 by the public. The sharps, however, have brought it down a half-point, and it now sits at eight.

The action, though, is still firmly on Tampa Bay. At William Hill, 79 percent of the tickets and 80 percent of the money bet on the game is on the Buccaneers.

Washington Defense Vs. Tampa Bay Offense

The key to this game will come down to Washington’s defensive line versus Tampa Bay’s offensive line. If the front four of Washington can get to Tom Brady, they will force him into mistakes. Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite Chase Young made the bold statement that he was looking forward to playing Brady.

“Tom Brady, Tom Brady, I’m coming!” Young exclaimed. “I want Tom!”

That might be youthful exuberance, but Young and his fellow lineman, most notably Montez Sweat, might be able to back up the bragging.

The defense ranked second in pass defense in the league. The games where Brady struggled were against teams that were proficient in that area.

Tampa Bay has the offensive line to protect Brady, and with weapons such as Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Antonio Brown, as well as tight end Rob Gronkowski, the secondary is going to have its hands full for most of the day.

Washington Offense Needs Big Game

Alex Smith is the feel-good story of the NFL, and the leading candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. That is all well and good, but Smith needs to play like a Pro Bowler if Washington is going to have any chance of winning this game.

Smith is 5-1 as a starter, and that bodes well for Washington. What is even more impressive is that one of those victories was against Pittsburgh.

What should scare bettors like myself is that Smith is questionable for this game. He suffered a calf injury a couple of weeks ago, and has not practiced a lot this week.

Head coach Ron Rivera told reporters he believes Smith will be ready to go.

“I’m not too worried about it,” Rivera said. “He’s a veteran guy, and he’s done some good things, and he’ll continue to do some good things for us.”

If the team can continue to run the ball effectively, and put pressure on Brady, they have a chance for the upset. I don’t think that will happen, but I do think they’ll keep it close.

News of Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski, and several other Browns personnel testing positive for COVID-19 sent the odds for the team’s Wild Card game against Pittsburgh spiraling. The Browns opened as 3.5-point favorites, but dropped to six points by Tuesday, and was even at 6.5 at Station Casinos. The over/under of 47 points remained unchanged.

Kevin Stefanski Cleveland Browns COVID-19

Cleveland made the playoffs for the first time since 2002, but Stefanski will not be on the sidelines. The team said that tight ends coach Drew Petzing and defensive backs coach Jeff Howard also tested positive. All three will miss the game.

“Our contingency planning calls for special teams coordinator Mike Priefer to serve as the acting head coach,” the team said in a statement. “The team will continue to consult with the league and medical experts to determine the appropriate next steps as the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and the entire community remains our highest priority.”

Two players, guard Joel Bitonio and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge were placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. The list is for players that have either tested positive or who has been put in quarantine. Teams are not allowed to disclose players’ medical status.

Tall Task Just Got Taller

The Browns defeated Pittsburgh in the final game of the regular season on Sunday, 24-22. The Steelers rested all of their starters for the game, including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

When the two teams met earlier in the year at Pittsburgh, the Steelers dominated them, 38-7. The Browns have not beaten their AFC North Division rival on the road in 17 years.

On Monday, Stefanski met with the media and told them the Wild Card game would be far different than the team’s home victory on Sunday.

“I think we expected it to look different with the change in quarterback, and we expect it to look different again this week,” Stefanski said. “That is part of their job is to play to their players’ strengths. We understand that may change. It is our job to put ourselves in their building, think like them and try and get a feel for what they may do this week.

Will Player’s Absence Affect Team?

The two players on the Reserve/Covid list were not starters. Bitonio had played in 12 games, however. Hodge had played in nine games, with 11 catches for 180 yards and no touchdowns.

The loss of those two affects the depth at each position. It should not have a huge bearing on the outcome. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said to reporters he sympathizes with the Browns and their plight.

“Every morning at 6 a.m. I am looking at my phone waiting for verification of the previous day’s test results,” Tomlin said. “Are we in the clear, or are we not, and what necessary adjustments need to be made. What investigations, if any, need to be made. That has been our life, and not only ours in Pittsburgh, but ours collectively as members of the National Football League since July. There are daily reminders.”

Three head coaches were the victims of NFL’s Black Monday, as the LA Chargers’ Anthony Lynn, the NY Jets’ Adam Gase, and Jacksonville’s Doug Marrone all found themselves out of a job. Two other rumored firings, Philadelphia’s Doug Pederson and Cincinnati’s Zak Taylor, had yet to materialize.

Anthony Lynn NFL Black Monday

The NFL’s Black Monday is usually when organizations decide the fate of their head coaches. Last season, five coaches hit the unemployment line the day after the regular season ended.

This year, some teams didn’t even wait until the end of the year. Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans, Dan Quinn of the Atlanta Falcons, and Matt Patricia of the Detroit Lions were each shown the door midway through the season.

Gase First Black Monday Casualty

The New York Jets made the announcement on Monday, but the decision to can Gase apparently was made on Sunday. The Jets were horrible, and Gase was, at one point, the odds-on favorite to be the first NFL head coach fired in 2020.

Jets management, however, decided to wait until after the season to make the move. Gase had been with the team for two seasons, compiling a record of 9-23. Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement a change had to be made.

“It is clear the best decision for the Jets is to move in a different direction,” Johnson said. “We knew there was a lot of work that needed to be done when Adam joined us in 2019. Our strong finish last year was encouraging, but unfortunately, we did not sustain that positive momentum or see the progress we all expected this season.”

Gase might not be out of work for long. He is being considered for the offensive coordinator job under Nick Saban at Alabama. He would replace Steve Sarkisian, who took the head coach’s job at the University of Texas.

Lynn Firing Will Attract Big Names

The Chargers announced early Monday that Lynn is no longer the team’s coach, a move that had been rumored for months. Lynn was with the team for four years, and led them to a playoff berth in 2018. His last two seasons were disappointing, however.

First-round draft pick Justin Herbert couldn’t save his coach’s job. The quarterback replaced Tyrod Taylor midway through the season, but the team finished with a 7-9 record. Herbert said Lynn was responsible for his progression.

“I learned a bunch from him,” Herbert said. “I’m really gonna miss him.”

Partly because of Herbert, the Los Angeles job should be attractive. The team has a young, exciting quarterback, and a solid defense.

Will Urban Meyer Replace Doug Marrone?

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ poor play secured the team the No. 1 pick in Trevor Lawrence. Unfortunately, Marrone won’t be around to see him in person. He was fired on Monday after five seasons where he compiled a 23-43 record.

The biggest rumor within the coaching world is that former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will replace Marrone. Meyer hasn’t addressed the speculation, but several media outlets have reported that he’s a leading candidate for the Jacksonville job.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan denied he’s spoken to Meyer about the position.

“On the rumor of Urban Meyer, obviously, I’ve known Urban over the years through Big Ten, and what have you,” Khan said to the media. “But we have not spoken to anyone about this job or even, obviously, interviewed him.”

When the NFL odds for Wild-Card Weekend were released late Sunday, the betting public decided to hold off on hammering any of the 12 teams playing in the first round of the playoffs. Of the six games, the largest line movement was a half-point on two games.

The Seattle Seahawks opened as a five-point favorite over the Los Angeles Rams, but quickly dropped to 4.5. The Baltimore Ravens were a four-point pick over the Tennessee Titans, but slipped to 3.5.

NFL Wild Card Weekend

Saturday
Indianapolis at Buffalo Bills -6.5
LA Rams at Seattle Seahawks -4.5
Tampa Bay at Washington Bucs -7.5
Sunday
Baltimore at Tennessee Ravens -3.5
Chicago at New Orleans Saints -9.5
Cleveland at Pittsburgh Steelers -3.5

The lines for the other four games held steady, with New Orleans having the largest point spread. The Saints are 9.5-point picks over the Chicago Bears, who backed into one of the final NFL Wild-Card Weekend spots. The Bears were pummeled 35-16 by the Green Bay Packers, but got a spot when the Arizona Cardinals couldn’t defeat the Rams.

Familiarity Rampant in NFL Wild-Card Weekend

Of the six games next weekend, four of them will be rematches of regular-season contests. In two of those games, the teams will have faced each other twice in the regular season.

Cleveland travels to Pittsburgh a week removed from downing the Steelers, 24-22. The Browns were a whopping 9-point favorite and didn’t come close to covering the spread. The betting public wasn’t buying the fact the Browns would thrive with the Steelers resting several starters. William Hill reported 65% of the tickets and 64% of the money was on the Steelers.

Though the Browns prevailed in the second game, they were pounded in Week 6, 38-7.

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Sunday they know beating Pittsburgh on the road will be difficult.

“I know we are going to play this team again next week,” Stefanski said. “We have a ton of respect for them, their coaches and their players. It is a first-class group that we are going to have to have a great week to get ready to play.”

The Rams and Seahawks also met twice during the regular season. The two NFC West rivals also split the two games. The Rams won in Week 9 at home, 23-16. The Seahawks won six weeks later, 20-9.

The other teams who faced each other during the regular season are New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Bears, and Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans. The Saints defeated the Bears, 26-23 in Week 7 on the road, while the Titans downed the Ravens on the road in Week 10, 30-24.

Déjà Vu for Washington’s Ron Rivera?

The NFC East sent a team to the playoffs with a losing record. Washington got in by getting past Philadelphia on the road Sunday, 20-14.

Washington became the first losing team to reach the playoffs since the 2015 Carolina Panthers made it with a 7-8-1 record. The coach of the Panthers that year? Ron Rivera, whose Washington team will host Tampa Bay.

The Panthers managed to upset their first-round opponent in 2015, beating Arizona, 27-16.

Just like Carolina, Washington made NFL Wild-Card Weekend because they won their division. Rivera told reporters on Sunday this is an achievement he’s proud of.

“This one’s special just because of how hard it was,” Rivera said. “How tough everything was, how it’s been on the guys, the organization. There’s a great group of young men in there, and we’re trying to do things the right way. It’s really a cool thing to come out and get the division.”

A Paraguayan soccer player literally got caught with his pants down during a recent match, where he may have partially exposed his genitalia after celebrating a goal. Guarani striker Raul Bobadilla scored late in the game to give his club a 3-2 aggregate victory over Libertad last week. He then began his wild celebration.

Raul Bobadilla soccer player penis
Soccer player Raul Bobadilla of Paraguay faces suspension after cameras caught him partially exposing his penis after scoring a goal. (Image: Getty)

It started with the 33-year-old ripping off his shirt as he ran to the sidelines. That earned him an automatic yellow card under FIFA’s laws of the game.

Bobadilla then extended his antics by pulling down his shorts, which led to the partial exposure of his member. Referees only saw Bobadilla’s backside, and did not issue a red card. Talk of a coverup by officials was quickly dismissed. Cameras that broadcast the match, however, picked up Bobadilla’s limp attempt at a Full Monty, and soon, the images exploded onto social media.

Bobadilla tried to make light of the situation when talking to reporters a day after the match.

“I regret my celebration,” Bobadilla said. “I hope my wife didn’t see it. She should remain calm. It’s all for her.”

Officials Investigating Bobadilla Display

Bobadilla could face a lengthy ban after the Paraguay Football Association (APF) opened an investigation into the incident. The APF’s Raul Prono said no decision has been made on Bobadilla’s future.

“We have begun official proceedings, as we didn’t receive any written complaints or anything from the referee,” Prono told reporters. “We got information from the internet, newspapers, and tapes, and they led us to this inquiry … and we have notified Raul Bobadilla, and he has three days in which to appeal.”

What might save Bobadilla from severe punishment is that the refs didn’t see the incident and issue a red card. That would have led to an automatic suspension.

Another Paraguayan Player Punished for Ball Handling

Bobadilla is the second Paraguayan player to be disciplined for failing to keep his hands off his manhood while on the pitch. In March, Olimipia’s Jorge Recalde received a four-match ban for grabbing his crotch after celebrating a goal.

Junk-related incidents are becoming all too casual in the sport of soccer. Last month, Preston’s Darnell Fisher of the England Football League was handed a three-game suspension for grabbing an opponent’s genitals during a match.

Fisher originally denied the charge, but it was picked up by video. His manager, Tony Pulis was furious about his player’s conduct.

“I think what the lad did was ridiculous really,” Pulis said. “Did he do it for Callum to react and try and get the kid sent off? That’s the only reason I can think why he did it. But it is ridiculous and something that should not happen in professional sport and, fingers crossed, we won’t see it again.”

The most egregious incident, however, happened in February when a French amateur received a five-year ban for biting a player’s member during an altercation. The resulting wound required 12 stitches to close.

With one week remaining in the regular season, the NFL playoff picture is coming into focus. The biggest losers were the Las Vegas Raiders, who played themselves out of a postseason spot, and the Indianapolis Colts, who could have secured one of the seven spots in the AFC, but are still alive.

The teams that don’t have to worry about Week 17 are Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Green Bay, New Orleans, Seattle, and Tampa Bay. Though those seven teams made the playoffs, only Kansas City can relax next week. The Chiefs locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and will get a first-week bye and home-field advantage up to the Super Bowl.

The biggest decision defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City head coach Andy Reid has is whether he will start or rest star players such as All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He was noncommittal after the team’s win on Sunday.

Mahomes said no decision has been made, but told reporters he’ll be ready no matter what happens.

“I just trust in the coaches,” Mahomes said. “I’m ready to go whenever that is. Coach Reid has done this for a long time, and EB (offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy) has done this for a long time. They know what’s best for the team, and we’ll be ready to go, whenever that is.”

Mahomes and other starters have definitely affected the odds for their final game against the LA Chargers. The game opened with Kansas City at -3, but has swung to the Chargers at -2.5.

NFC Playoff Picture Cloudy

The No. 1 seed in the NFC will be decided next week, and three teams are in the hunt for the top spot. The edge goes to Green Bay, who can win with a victory over Chicago next week. The Packers opened at -5.5, but came down a point in early betting.

If Green Bay is unable to defeat Chicago, New Orleans could grab the No. 1 seed if they beat Carolina. They also saw line movement. After opening at-6.5, they dropped to four-point favorites.

Seattle will get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they can defeat San Francisco, and Green Bay and New Orleans lose. They are favored by 3.5 points after opening at 6.5.

With Tampa Bay getting a playoff spot, three remain, and six teams will battle for them. One will be decided by whoever wins the NFC East. If Washington defeats Philadelphia, and they one-point underdogs, they get that playoff spot. If they lose, the winner of the Dallas-New York Giants game, where the Cowboys are favored by 2.5 points, will be the NFC Champion.

The Rams and Bears get in if they win, but if either of them don’t, the door opens for Arizona.

KC, Pittsburgh, Buffalo Tops in AFC

With Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, locking down the first three playoff spots, just five teams are in the hunt for the last four spots. If Tennessee, Baltimore, Miami, and Cleveland win next Sunday, they’re in. If any of them falter, Indianapolis has a chance to grab a postseason berth.

Even though Cleveland is playing playoff-bound Pittsburgh, they may have a better chance at victory. The Steelers could rest their starters. The Browns are 7.5 picks to win.

The same scenario may exist for Miami. They face the Bills, and may see a lot of second-stringers. The Bills are favored by four, but are playing Monday night against New England, and with a short week may want to rest their starters.

Oddsmakers believe Baltimore will have an easy time with Cincinnati, and have them as 11-point favorites.

The Colts, who are playing the 1-14 Jacksonville Jaguars, are favored by 13 points. They get into the playoffs if they win, and either the Titans, Ravens, Browns, or Dolphins lose. If Tennessee loses, the Colts will also capture the AFC South title.

The first meeting between Philadelphia and Dallas nearly two months ago went decisively in favor of the Eagles, 23-9, and there is no reason Sunday’s game shouldn’t be a repeat of that contest. That is why with this week’s One Bet, $100 and I going to take Philadelphia and give away 2.5 points to the Cowboys.

Last week I, along with most of the betting public, sat in shocked silence as the New York Jets got its first victory of the season, defeating the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20. The Jets were a 17-point underdog, and I thought there was no way they could cover, much less win, against the Rams.

One Bet, $100

Philadelphia -3 over Dallas Lost: Rams 3-3, Up $65

I wasn’t alone. Eight-five percent of the money bet at William Hill on the game was on the Rams. The loss was a huge win for sportsbooks, who along with Cincinnati upsetting Pittsburgh, saw a seven-figure win.

Motivation Big Factor for Philadelphia, Dallas

The NFC East is still a toss up, and even though Washington has a one-game lead atop the division, neither Dallas or Philadelphia is out of it. If either team wins its last two games they could upend Washington and take the division.

The question is which team is motivated more to win. I believe that team is Philadelphia. The Eagles are in last place in the NFC East at 4-9-1, but a win against the Cowboys leaps them up to second place. If Washington loses later in the day, the final week of the season has the Eagles hosting Washington for what could be the playoff spot in the division.

Dallas is not out of reaching first place, but getting past Philadelphia is the first test. Then they would have to go on the road and face the New York Giants in the final game of the season. They are 2-5 away from AT&T Stadium, with their two wins coming against Minnesota and Cincinnati.

Quarterback Andy Dalton told reporters they know what they have to do to reach the postseason.

“Our focus is the next two games,’’ Dalton said. “We’ve just got to handle what we can handle and control what we can control. We know that there’s still a chance out there. But for us, we just have to make the most out of these last two opportunities and see how everything shakes out.”

Injuries Could Decide Outcome

Dallas was a healthier team when they met Philadelphia the first time. They were utilizing the third-string quarterback, Ben DiNucci. That went as bad as expected, but having Dalton under center might yield similar results. Dalton has three quality wide receivers to throw to, but the only problem is having enough time to get the ball to them. His offensive line is decimated with injuries, including All Pros Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, as well as La’el Collins. If Philadelphia can get pressure on Dalton, he will make mistakes. He hasn’t had an interception in is last two games, but that could change.

Another area that could be exposed is the Cowboys’ run defense. They rank last in run defense. They will they have to stop running back Miles Sanders, but quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts took over for benched starter Carson Wentz, and has had two strong rushing performances, as well as success passing. It could be a headache the Cowboys are unable to deal with, and watch helplessly as Hurts runs all over them.

Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Ohio State are the four teams that will play in the College Football Playoff for a shot at the national championship. Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Cincinnati were left out by the CFP committee when the teams were announced on Sunday.

Alabama will face Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The game was moved from Southern California to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, because of California’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Clemson, ranked No. 2, takes on No. 3 Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl at the SuperDome in New Orleans after the conclusion of the Rose Bowl.

Odds Moving for College Football Playoff

William Hill set the lines for the two semifinal games, and there was immediate movement in one of them. Alabama opened as a 17.5-point favorite, but was quickly bet up to 19. Wynn sportsbook had the line at 20. According to Bet Labs, there has never been a favorite of 20 or more points in the College Football Playoff. Surprisingly there hasn’t been a favorite in a regular bowl game of 20 or more points since 2005 when FAU was a 23-point pick at the 2017 Boca Raton Bowl over Akron.

The Crimson Tide, the best team in the country, faces a Notre Dame squad that was embarrassed on Saturday in the ACC title game. Clemson clobbered the Fighting Irish, 34-10. There was criticism by some that Notre Dame got the fourth CFP spot.

The last time Alabama and Notre Dame met was in the 2012 National Championship game. The Crimson Tide dominated Notre Dame, 42-14. Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly defended his team getting into the CFP.

“I think we have the ability to move the football, certainly,” Kelly said. “We’ve been humbled about the way we play, and this team has always come back with a resilience and an edge about them, and they will against Alabama.”

Clemson began as a seven-point pick over Ohio State, but that line quickly moved to 7.5.

Did Ohio State Play Enough Games?

The Buckeyes got some blowback about their inclusion into the College Football Playoff. At 6-0, some think they haven’t played enough games. One of those critics is Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

“That was the big thing about this season: The people who played 10 and 11 games had to survive the grind,” Saban said. “And the grind of this season was a whole lot different than any other season. That’s why I thought those teams should be rewarded.”

OSU head coach Ryan Day defended his team, telling reporters on Saturday he knows they can compete with anyone.

“All I’m going to say is this — people can say whatever they want,” Day said. “They have their opinions. I’m not going to talk about other teams because I think we have enough to talk about positively about our program, but I’ll say this; If we have an opportunity to play anybody in the country in one game, I’m going to take the Ohio State Buckeyes.”

Texas A&M’s Exclusion Unprecedented

The team that many thought should be the fourth team playing on New Year’s Day was Texas A&M, but they finished fifth in the rankings. It was the first time a one-loss SEC team didn’t make the College Football Playoff.

After the Aggies won their final-season game on Saturday, beating Tennessee, 34-13, head coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters he thought his team should be in the CFP.

“Seven straight SEC wins. Some schools ain’t even playing seven games,” Fisher said. “I don’t care what league you’re in. If you’re going to pick the best four teams, we’re one of them.”

CFP chairman Gary Barta disagreed.

“Very similar resumes,” Barta said on ESPN. “But in the end, the committee felt like Notre Dame had earned its way there based on the complete analysis of the resume, and that probably came down to having an additional win against a ranked team.”

The Los Angeles Rams are rolling right now, both in the standings and against the spread. That streak should continue Sunday against the New York Jets. The Rams are 17-point favorites against the Jets, with the line jumping from its opening of 13.5.

I’m not afraid of the 17 points, and will gladly give them away with this week’s One Bet, $100 to watch the Rams to handle the winless Jets. My last bet on the NFL was Buffalo hosting New England. I gave away four points and watched the Bills fail to cover, winning 24-21.

This Week Last Bet Season Total
LA Rams -17 vs. NY Jets Lost: Buffalo 3-2, Up $165

I feel much better about Rams hosting the Jets for several reasons, though I must admit, the 17 points does make me a little nervous. It’s the second-largest point spread this season; the largest came when New York received 19.5 when they traveled to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs.

Don’t Fear Big Numbers

The Jets lost that game 35-9, and Kansas City covered by 6.5 points. In fact, New York has been a double-digit dog two other times, and couldn’t cover on either occasion.

Last week, the Jets were getting 16.5 points in their road game against the Seattle Seahawks and lost 40-3. Do you see a trend here? The Jets record against the spread is a dismal 4-9 while the Rams are 8-5 ATS.

The one factor that gave me pause is the only other time Los Angeles was favored by 10 or more this season was in Week 4 when they were a 13.5-pick against the New York Giants. They won, 17-9, failing to cover by 5.5 points.

Rams Offense Peaking

That was early in the season, however, and it seemed like the Rams’ offense was still finding its way. In their last five games, four of which they covered, the team has scored 20 or more points.

The team did receive a positive COVID-19 test from one of its players this week, but LA head coach Sean McVay says they’re following all of the protocols, and aren’t worried.

“We’ve talked about having agility as a team and with our players, and these guys have seamlessly handled all the adjustments that we’ve had to make.”

Defense Should Swarm Jets

While the offense has made improvements, McVay hasn’t worried about the defense. That side of the ball is No. 1 in total defense, while the Jets are one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL. They’ve scored 10 or fewer points in seven of their games.

Rams defensive end Aaron Donald comes into the game with a league-high 12.5 sacks, and is just three away from the franchise record. Donald, though, told reporters he isn’t concerned about individual achievements.

I’m just going to keep playing ball,” Donald said. “I’ll let the game come to me and we’ll see what happens.”

What will likely happen is that the Jets’ porous offensive line will allow Donald to be in quarterback Sam Darnold’s face all day. Donald could break the team’s sack record on Sunday.

What isn’t in doubt is how this game will play out. The Rams will be able to score at will against the Jets, and the defense could very well hand the NFL’s worst team a shutout.
